Study on how much children use the technology

As part of the regular curriculum of the Digital School where in the form of a course for children under the age of 18 is taught programming, computer science, robotics, and electronics, general lessons about technology and digital education are in separate focus at all times.

By taking advantage of technology exposure in a child's life, it is very important that we understand whether you are preparing children in the best way for them to face a life so highly dependent on technology.

To understand more in this regard, the Digital School has begun to analyze children's habits in relation to technology. From the first results where more than 500 children aged 7 - 15 years were surveyed with 12 basic questions, we have these results and analysis.

Most children have more than one device in their possession. It is important to note that 45% of children have a Sony Playstation, Xbox or Nintendo, not to mention the fact that 50% only have personal smartphones.

The topic of smartphone addiction is not something that is discussed only in relation to the child, but it is also very valid for adults. More than 43% of children admit to being addicted to their phone.

When children were asked about their online activities, over 73% said they visit Social Media like Facebook and Youtube. In the case of Facebook it is important to note that the allowed age is at least 13 years old. This rule is largely ignored by children.

It is strange to think today to stay without technology for 1 month. During the summer school organized by the Digital School Summer School and Camp, the children, in addition to lessons, had the opportunity to spend two days in the Germia camp in Prishtina where the most common question you could hear from the children was whether there is Wi-Fi here! Normal, questions from those who did not have 3G or 4G.

Social networks have become part of children, whether we like it or not. If those children who are not part of social networks today, the chances are very high that they will soon become part of them given the high social pressure they have from society. Most children use social media at least once a day or more.

Questions perhaps a little difficult for children, however, 71% said they understood.

However, all these children who answered that they understand, when asked for details of what they understand, did not know how to answer even the basic things about the issue.

The problem is that if you ask this big question you will also realize that most social media users are not able to understand the rules of use.

In the case of children, it is important to be shallow, because today they are facing an online social pressure, a very high pressure that the generations before them have not experienced. It is important to analyze and understand this problem as this can also lead to psychological consequences for children from various harassment or the appearance of inadequate content that they present, without further entering into other topics such as identity theft, scams, serious harassment, viruses, etc.

Most children use social media more for other purposes such as playing games or wasting time. On the other hand where the basic purpose of social networking is to connect with people or groups of common interest, less than 20% of children use it for this reason.

When we ask children what Digital Citizenship is, we can see that almost half of them do not know that being a digital citizen is the same as being a citizen when you go out and civic education is fundamental for each of us. The mere fact that we are spending a good part of our lives near our screens, just because we are hiding behind a computer does not mean that the basic rules of society do not apply. In this regard, a lot of education is needed, especially for young people who are waiting for a very technology-related future.

This topic is almost taboo in our society. Online bullying is just as dangerous as physical bullying. The analysis shows that out of all this social exposure over 30% of children admit to being bullied online by someone. However, in private discussions, the children also told me about cases where they came out in meetings with anonymous people for the purpose of playing online games together. Fortunately, our society is not degraded to the extent of the western world where child abduction is a very serious topic, however parents should be extra careful as this does not mean that the risk is not possible.

On the other hand, when we ask kids if they have bullied anyone online, the statistics are worse than I would have liked them to be. Nearly 30% of children admit to having bullied someone online, in one form or another. Perhaps this has to do with the nature of the society we are in, where between ourselves and close society cynicism is deeply ingrained in society.

At the Digital School we teach children how to use these technological devices effectively, teaching them to look at these devices as working tools to explore, create and be informed and not just as a game or a way to get lost. time. Moreover, they must now be educated on digital education as the basic basis of our daily lives in the same way as civic education.
